I don't know how we would actually run our business without Hyland and Epic partnering with each other. Clinicians expect information at their fingertips, and when somebody's going into surgery at 2 in the morning, if that surgeon is not able to go and pull up all of the notes, they can't do their jobs. And so Hyland is big in our world about making sure that the clinicians can do that. Patients first is one of our mottos and one of the standards that we have at OU Health.  

Even though I'm running the business side of it, I have to support those clinicians, and they need that information at their fingertips. When I joined the organization, we were in the process of transitioning away from a for-profit healthcare system, and we had to make some hard choices about which direction the organization was going to go.  

The healthcare industry is constantly changing based on government regulations — just the innovation that happens on a daily basis; research changes everything. And all of that means that you're going to have to find ways to house that data. And so that was one of the big drivers in going with someone because we know that the scalability offered us those opportunities. We wanted to make sure that when we picked an enterprise application, we could truly use it across the enterprise. We're not going to be single-threaded in choosing that vendor and making sure again that they're your partner in this whole journey.   

We started in our HR space and then when we implemented Epic a couple of years ago. That's when we really, really expanded the platform and use it across that clinical enterprise. We use it for in-hospital billing, professional billing. We've got that information in our HIM department, all of those things, all that information’s needed to come together so that we have the information we need to either take care of the patient or to run the business. So having that all consolidated under one platform makes a huge difference.
