Information governance the #1 barrier to modernisation for UK businesses

Hyland, the pioneer of The Content Innovation Cloud™, is today releasing the findings of its inaugural Digital Maturity Index in which information governance has emerged as the biggest barrier to technological development for UK businesses. This annual survey of UK IT decision makers, which quantifies their technological maturity, and their capacity to make the most of cutting-edge technology, finds that nearly three-fifths of businesses (58%) see information governance as the biggest obstacle to cloud adoption. Over half (54%) identify it as a key challenge for artificial intelligence, while 43% indicate challenges in automation technologies. And this is despite nine in ten (91%) confirming information governance as an important strategic focus.

“Information governance is about empowerment as much as anything else - It enables organisations to adopt transformative technologies like AI and automation with confidence, fostering continuous innovation in a secure, intelligent environment,” said Hyland Senior Vice President for EMEA and APAC, Malte Dieckelmann. “Unfortunately for many UK organisations, it’s also becoming a roadblock. There’s a clear gap between what businesses need to do to stay competitive and what they feel equipped to achieve, with limited resources, expertise, and budgets often holding them back.”

This has raised concerns about the state of information governance in the UK. Just 10% of organisations have a “robust” information governance strategy across all operations, with businesses citing complexity of implementation (45%), budget constraints (40%), and a lack of technical expertise (36%) as the top barriers to developing their governance capabilities.

“Without addressing these gaps, UK organisations are failing to acknowledge a critical enabler of business success, and risk falling behind the competition,” cited Dieckelmann. “Platforms like the Content Innovation Cloud have been specifically developed to do so, shifting spend from legacy governance to a modern cloud-based platform that streamlines processes, federates various content sources and leverages AI for continuous innovation.”
