It’s a precarious time for technology companies.

We know that every decision we make has the potential to impact thousands of organizations and millions of Hyland users. That isn’t a responsibility we take lightly. Under the lens of global volatility, we’re deciding, over and over again, that it’s all about our customers. It always has been. In good times and bad, our commitment to our customers remains our North Star.

As part of that commitment, we’re approaching our product roadmap methodically and strategically, and we’re continuing to put our customers first.

No matter the state of the market, Hyland prioritizes smart, user-driven, continuous improvements made at the pace of customer progress, to meet real-world business demands.

Because the real power of Hyland extends far beyond the initial deal. Partnering with us isn’t just about the buying experience or purchase decision; it’s about the experience of being a long-term Hyland customer.

Hyland remains committed to developing innovative, advanced technologies. And we remain even more committed to our belief that technology is only part of the equation. The other part – the bigger, more important part, if you ask us – is the people who use that technology.

Banking’s digital transformation is being driven by intelligent automation (IA), which taps artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and other electronic processes to build robust and efficient workflows. IA can deliver information, reduce costs, improve speed, enhance accuracy and remove bottlenecks with fewer human touchpoints. Even better, IA is smart enough to learn as it grows.

This is a summary of the Hyland-sponsored webinar Content Fuels Your Anywhere-Work Strategy: Top Trends Shaping the Content Services Market, featuring guest speaker Cheryl McKinnon, Principal Analyst, Forrester Research.

As the apex of the pandemic continues to wane, it is clearer and clearer that many of the reactionary work-from-anywhere strategies we implemented in response to 2020 are here to stay.

Further, content has become one of the foundational expectations we have in our “anywhere work,” which depends entirely on the flow of content and communication.

Cheryl McKinnon, a principal analyst with Forrester, studies the evolution of content services.

She shared in our October 2022 webinar that it’s important to reflect on the changes that organizations have undergone and the challenges they’ve overcome. Then we can identify which strategies are enabling organizations to become more innovative, adaptive and resilient — and how those strategies must continue to evolve to fit our changing business processes.

So what does Cheryl see coming in 2023?

Hyland and PaaS

What is PaaS?

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) is a cloud computing model in which a vendor supplies a development and deployment environment for building and deploying software applications.

Put simply, you “rent” a platform that has everything you need for creating cloud-based applications. Developers can use PaaS to build anything from lightweight mobile apps to powerful, complex enterprise applications.

Like other “-as-a-Service” models, you buy PaaS on an as-needed, on-demand basis and access it over the internet. The PaaS vendor owns the hardware, a combination of infrastructure, operational capabilities, security monitoring and governance — and handles upkeep and maintenance.

How does PaaS work?

PaaS works by supplying everything developers need to build, test, deliver and manage software applications across the software development lifecycle.

PaaS supplies essential computing infrastructure as a traditional data center does, but adds a development framework, application infrastructure, middleware, container systems like Kubernetes, and other prebuilt components as well as development tools and resources.

Compared with a traditional programming environment, these features dramatically reduce the amount of coding required. PaaS also makes it easier to build sophisticated applications that incorporate advanced technology like analytics or business intelligence.

What’s the difference between PaaS and SaaS?

The primary difference between PaaS and SaaS is right in the name: Platform-as-a-Service delivers a platform for building software, while Software-as-a-Service delivers, well … software.

What PaaS and SaaS have in common: a vendor owns and has responsibility for the computing infrastructure, operations and maintenance; both use subscription-style or “pay as you go” pricing, and both deliver the service via the Internet.

One of the unequivocal things that the post-COVID-onset environment for transformational change has taught us is that it’s imperative for initiatives to be able to demonstrate to the business (quickly and clearly) the value that they bring, to whom and how much.

(The old “when” part of those questions is pretty much a given these days: i.e. it’s now, or at least as soon to now as is practicable.) But when attempting to apply this to innovation activities — which may promise benefits on a longer payback timescale, or require other foundational work to fully run its course first, or be harder to encapsulate in financial terms — how can an organisation know that it’s ‘doing innovation’ right? What measurements can you take to determine capability and capacity to innovate (generally), and the impact of a particular innovation project (specifically)?

In this piece:

Managing to succeed

How do you know you’re doing it right?

Call to action

An ideal innovation lifecycle is truly end-to-end. It begins at the nebulous, often unexpected spark of inspiration, runs though idea capture, prototyping, wider testing with larger scale ‘demonstrator’ projects and more, eventually leading to the development of some new (or vastly improved) product, service or practice change.

These stages are often repeated, with feedback loops capturing, consolidating and disseminating the learning points along the way. Rigorous decision gates are employed to determine whether ideas progress to the next stage — the whole process being designed to whittle down a pool of bright ideas into a focused stream of workable changes that deliver benefits to the organisation.

The iteration and its branches (off and back again) tend to make practical representations of the process far messier than the ideal “funnel diagram” often deployed to make it appear neater and more easily managed (and predictable) than it really is.

However, notwithstanding the messiness when research meets the real world (when are actual transformation projects ever really as simple as their PowerPoint overview slide might suggest…?), it’s still a good high-level concept to hang on to as you start to look at the best ways to make these elements work in your own organisational context (with its particular native talent pool and technology estate, partner contributions, financial resources, stakeholder commitment, appetite for risk and market conditions).

Managing to succeed

Although maybe daunting to describe in print or diagrammatic form, the innovation lifecycle isn’t a dark art to be left to luck and happenstance. Support comes from technology (in the form both of specialist tools — manging ideation processes, for example; and intelligent application of more generic interconnected collaboration, workflow, adaptive case management and information management solutions), as well as from the expertise and experience that trusted partners can bring to the table.

They will have seen and done it before (in scenarios similar to your own) and can help your organisation grow its capability into the shape it needs to be in order to innovate more naturally and natively. Plus they can plug capacity gaps in the meantime to get things off the ground on the way to scaling up.

Rising interest rates. The possibility of a recession. Credit quality and balance sheets.

There’s a lot that can keep bankers up at night. Factor in always-rising customer expectations, and the industry is often in need of technology solutions.

To get a better sense of where things stand at the start of the year, we turned to Chris Sims, Hyland’s Industry Consultant for Financial Services.

Chris has more than 20 years of experience in bank management, with a focus on mortgage lending, commercial lending and retail banking. At Hyland, Chris leverages that wealth of knowledge to help banks and credit unions address pain points and achieve their objectives.

We discussed top challenges and trends in the industry, the need for technology improvements, the importance of content services and much more.

Innovation techniques come in many different shapes and forms — each one designed to improve engagement, strengthen strategic alignment, remove biases, increase the scale and speed of activity, etc. in some way or other.

But there are also some common pitfalls associated with implementing any and all of these.

So what makes the best sense for your organisation, and how can you avoid the bear traps?

Depending on the type of business you are, the area you’re working in, and the people working for you, most organisations tend to aim for a balance of incremental innovation and radical, disruptive innovation.

The former takes a more ‘continuous improvement’ stance, focusing on making relatively small process efficiency gains or performance improvements. It relies on leveraging existing knowledge and resources to solve already pretty-well understood problems. Low risk/moderate return … unlikely to bestow any major competitive advantage or shake up the industry you operate in. Some may be reluctant to even refer to it as “innovation” at all (though it can certainly share some of the same process stages, albeit on a smaller scale).

On the other hand, the latter — with a more disruptive ethos — aims for transformation impact that brings step changes in performance, new offerings, flipped business models, etc. It’s a much more challenging affair and requires the injection of new knowledge, skills and resources in order to see any bright new idea through to production. Unsurprisingly there’s no guarantee of success on this scale every time, so Really Big Wins can be quite rare.

A twin-pronged approach that embraces elements of each can help spread the risk, with more evolutionary tweaks to business-as-usual offerings perhaps able to address the more immediate change imperatives faster and with less pain (although lacking the revolutionary jolt needed to achieve more seismic shifts and hit longer term goals).

Creating, managing, and storing import or export documentation is a pain.

Nobody likes doing it; it’s cumbersome, complex work that is prone to errors.

In our experience, many, if not most, make the work much harder than it needs to be, and they also make more errors than they care to admit. This blog post explains how to radically simplify documentation work, reduce costs and eliminate errors by going digital using content services.

Import/export compliance is changing

Because you are reading this, you likely already know that any import or export process typically involves generating a bill of lading, a commercial invoice, a declaration, a certificate of origin, and possibly an insurance certificate.

There will likely be at least three copies of each, and the requirement is to archive them securely for at least five years.

Typically, most of these documents have been paper-based.

Even though regulators worldwide have been moving at a fast pace to accept digital records, the requirement to store paper copies for years after the transaction has meant there was little appetite for change.

However, now that most, if not all, jurisdictions allow you to archive digital files rather than hard copy originals, there is an opportunity to radically simplify the way we work.
