# Garney Case Study

## How Garney transforms HR document management from days to seconds

Growing construction company simplifies processes and renews trust in its HR systems by moving to a unified platform.

## Snapshot

**Industry:** Commercial (construction)\
**Location:** North America \
**Organization size:** 1,000-5,000 employees\
**Hyland solutions:** [Hyland OnBase](/en/solutions/products/onbase)™

## Summary

As Garney grew, its HR systems became more difficult to manage. By moving to a unified platform powered by OnBase, the team simplified processes, improved access to information and reduced document search time from days to seconds. The results are a faster, more reliable experience, and renewed trust in HR systems.

## When growth outpaces systems

As Garney, a 100% employee-owned construction company, continued to grow, its HR team had to manage more employee information across more systems.

Multiple systems made it difficult to keep employee information aligned. Teams had to reconcile details across platforms, which slowed work and created frustration.

“We use multiple systems when it comes to HR, so ensuring that each system is telling the same story across the board was definitely an area of opportunity,” HR Technology Specialist Zack Robertson said.

Employees expected faster, easier access to information, but issues with a legacy system reduced confidence.

> There are a lot of tech companies out there, but customer service isn’t always the same. What stood out for Hyland was their customer service.

## Choosing a partner for the future

As Garney evaluated options, the team was looking for more than new technology. They wanted a partner that could help them modernize without adding complexity.

“There are a lot of tech companies out there, but customer service isn’t always the same. What stood out for Hyland was their customer service,” Robertson said.

Integration was also critical. With SAP as its core HCM system, Garney needed a solution that would connect seamlessly without adding complexity.

## Unifying documents, data and workflows

With [Hyland for SAP SuccessFactors](/en/platform/integrations/sap-successfactors), which leverages OnBase’s content repository, Garney brought HR documents and data together in one connected place.

Teams can now manage content created inside and outside SAP without switching systems. An integration with SAP SuccessFactors helps keep information consistent, and an Outlook integration makes it easier to capture documents.

“The Outlook integration has been a fan favorite. Being able to just import documents easily without saving them locally reduces risk,” Robertson said.

For high-volume teams like benefits, centralizing documents in OnBase made information easier to find and gave employees a more consistent way to work.

> The metric that improved the most was the time spent searching for documents. It took anywhere between hours and days, but now it’s taken us seconds.

## From delays to real-time access

The most significant change was speed.

“The metric that improved the most was the time spent searching for documents. It took anywhere between hours and days, but now it’s taken us seconds,” Robertson said.

Instead of navigating multiple systems, employees can access information instantly. Consistency across systems also helped rebuild trust.

“Being able to provide a system that tells the same story facilitated that regain of trust,” Robertson said.

Responsive support also helped rebuild confidence, with quick issue resolution and a smooth implementation completed in just 16 weeks.

## Building a foundation for what’s next

With a stronger HR foundation in place, Garney is exploring how to expand these improvements across the business.

The team is also evaluating how AI can further reduce manual work by surfacing missing information and accelerating knowledge discovery.

“Hyland has a lot of opportunities with AI to streamline our processes, whether that’s intelligent document processing or knowledge discovery,” Robertson said.

“Having AI show us what’s missing instead of going looking for it ourselves, it’s going to be huge.”

For Garney, connected information is now helping HR move faster today — and giving the team room to keep improving what comes next.
