University of Rochester Medical Center’s enterprise medical imaging implementation has helped the provider break down silos and improve image sharing and collaboration.

The two biggest issues that we face were using Enterprise Imaging Strategy are silo patient’s data and then regional consolidation of healthcare delivery organization. Both of those are driven by increased deficiency. Healthcare delivery organizations are under tremendous pressure to increase efficiency, decrease costs and is being measured by outcomes in value-based outcomes for patient care. That's difficult to do when patient’s data is silo.
We developed an enterprise imaging roadmap and implement it 4 years ago. We started with the redefined or reconstructed PACS in radiology imaging science, where we deploy the Acuo VNA is the foundation of our enterprise imaging strategy along with a Philips IntelliSpace PACS as our enterprise viewer, radiology diagnostic viewer and Nuance Primordial Workflow Manager is our workflow manager and what that did is that it allows and gives us the flexibility, start to reach out and embrace other image generating departments -the cardiovascular service line perinatology (maternal-fetal medicine). Moving on from that road map has moved in the point of care ultrasound and will embrace visible light images especially those commit from scopes.
Flexibility in storage management
Acuo VNA really serves as the foundation of our strategy because it gives us great flexibility in managing the storage that data represents as well as the billions of in-images. In fact, we take in almost 700,000 unique images daily into the Acuo VNA. It gives us incredible flexibility in allowing us to manage the data. When it comes to the design of the data flow for the VNA, Don Dennison actually has a nice blog that describes VNA-centric vs. a PACS-centric data flow.
We've used a hybrid approach and what we put the VNA routing to you in between the modalities and PACS itself and then the VNA archive after the PACS. That gives us a very powerful tool that VNA routing tier is the dialcom equivalent of an HL7 interface agents that allows us to manipulate the metadata and true data integrity and what not.
Leverage enterprise & PACS strengths
But it then gives the images to the viewer as quickly as possible and allows us to leverage the built-in reconciliation and data management tools that are in the PACS platform. That gives us the added benefit, the data is most likely to be pristine or clean when it goes over to the permanent archive.
