Forrester Research said it in this November 2011 report, and you know it – you have more types of content than ever, each with different nuances and demands coming from the processes that they’re driving.

While this means that enterprise content management (ECM) solutions are in high demand, it also signals a change for which ECM solutions best meet an organization’s needs.

ECM suites are a thing of the past

To get the most value from an ECM strategy, organizations are finding that a big, one-size-fits-all ECM suite isn’t always the way to go.

The reality is that “enterprise” doesn’t mean one-sized anymore. Now, when organizations look for an “enterprise” solution, they're looking for one that can enable the success of one department and then scale that success across the organization. "Enterprise" is the opportunity for growth - when you want it and at the pace you want it.

In order to achieve this new kind of enterprise solution, Forrester states that most organizations “look to ECM technology to solve specific business needs,” a methodology Forrester refers to as “a more content-centric approach.”

Balance solving business needs with a strong ECM foundation

But “content-centric” ECM isn’t just for narrow point solutions that are limited to your accounts payable department. In fact, ECM solutions that are too content-centric can end up creating content silos.

That’s why organizations need to look for balanced, well-rounded ECM solutions – those that can integrate with important line of business applications in specific departments, but also that have a stable, yet constantly evolving, set of foundational ECM technologies. After all, you can’t build an ECM strategy without a foundation.
